Explore the flowing and meditative practice of watercolor painting in this introductory class. Learn the fundamentals of paint mixing, color theory, various application techniques, and much more. We’ll study inspirational painters such as Singer Sargent, Hopper, Whistler, and others to learn how to create dynamic and expressive paintings of landscapes, still lifes, and botanical subjects. Create expressive, meditative paintings of nature using Sumi ink and brushes. You’ll learn how to make sumi ink with an ink stick and water, use the brush in creative ways, explore classical Japanese watercolor techniques, try marbling, and more. Draw inspiration from the Japanese Edo Period while painting subjects such as mountains, waterfalls, rocks, trees, birds, and insects, as well as classical plants like the orchid and bamboo, symbols of spring and summer.
