Wood Carving: Wooden Beads (Family)

Family Classes -
Spring 2024

PLEASE NOTE! Fee covers one adult/child pair. Please register under adult’s name only.

Carving fresh, found wood into useful objects is a fun, relaxing, satisfying hobby. Learn how to carve wooden beads from local, rescued logs and get an overview of “green” woodworking and safe use of a carving knife. The finished beads make fun keychains, distinctive jewelry, or holiday ornaments. We’ll wrap up with a discussion on finishing touches and decoration possibilities to finish at home. Ages 10+

Matt Day

Matt Day is passionate about trees: "they highlight so many of the joyful moments of our life. Swinging from a branch, making a stick fort, forming the homes that shelter us – trees are such an integral part of our lives." Matt reclaims local logs – fallen in storms or taken down for safety reasons – and gives them a second life as functional art.

"I work with mostly hand-powered, traditional tools. A carving axe, adze, drawknife, and gouges give things shape, guiding the transformation from log to bowl or spoon. These hand tools are best able to work with the wood and not against it. I look to highlight the grain and structure of the wood, bringing out its character and uniqueness."

His carvings are created to be both beautiful and useful. They are a way to bring a sense of specialness, joy, and ritual to everyday moments.

Matt has been working in wood for twelve years. His education in the craft has been a mix of self-study, brief periods of formal instruction, and countless informal discussions with mentors and peers. Two years ago, he began to teach carving in private and small group lessons.
