Pottery is one of the oldest expressions of human inventiveness and creativity, dating from before the Neolithic period and discovered in various locations around the globe. Explore the potentials of clay by creating both functional vessels and sculptural forms in this class for beginners. Learn basic handbuilding, wheel throwing, and surface decorating techniques. All work will be glazed and fired, resulting in vibrant, durable, waterproof, and food-safe pieces of art.
Dana Cooperson is an Arlington-based potter who loves creating surface texture by carving and pressing patterns into clay. Her functional work is based on a combination of wheel-thrown and hand-built forms. Her work can be seen locally at The Roasted Granola Cafe and on Instagram at @blueheliopots.
Joe Lipari, a ceramic artist and graduate of Providence College, embarked on his ceramics journey at Providence College and Mudville Studio in Somerville, MA. In 2020, he made the leap to becoming a full-time potter and teacher in his New Jersey hometown. There, he crafted and sold functional stoneware and imparted his expertise through engaging pottery wheel lessons. In 2024, Joe will continue teaching pottery to students at Arlington Community Education.
