Classes for high school students
Rehearse and present a fully staged theater production in just two weeks! This full-day program for acting and singing enthusiasts will be led by the Arlington High School drama director and the Ottoson Middle School music and chorus director. We’ll be staging James and the Giant Peach, Jr., based on Roald Dahl’s novel and witten by Timothy Allen McDonald. This “masterpeach” of a tale features music and lyrics by award-winning songwriters Benj Pasek & Justin Paul (best known for their work on La La Land and The Greatest Showman). Get a taste of performing or grow your talent and confidence in a supportive and creative environment. This program will culminate with an evening performance that will be open to the public on July 19.
Workshop/Info Session: Learn how to put your best foot forward in an audition. Find out more about this program on Wednesday, May 22, 3:30-5:00 pm. Parents are invited to join the information session at 4:45 pm.
Auditions: All participants must perform both an acting and a singing audition. Auditions will be held on June 11 at AHS. All are welcome, regardless of experience.
Note: You must commit to the entire two weeks and be available for the evening show on July 19.
Michael Byrne has been teaching drama and film at Arlington High School since 2001. He has also taught and directed at The Lyric Stage of Boston's youth summer program Lyric First Stage, Derby Academy, Tufts University Magic Circle Theatre, The Framingham Civic League, and guest lectured at the Harvard Extension School. In addition to directing at AHS, Michael has directed at Holliston High School, Danvers High School, and Groton-Dunstable Regional Schools.
Cori Smith is a music and chorus teacher at Ottoson Middle School. She has been teaching music for 20 years in Arlington and has been involved in the musical theater program at Ottoson since 2013. This is the fifth summer that Cori has taught for Arlington Community Ed as their music director.
