Explore the inner workings of computer keyboards by building your own custom keypad. Whether you’ve wondered about how they work or daydreamed about making your own, come assemble a fully-functional 8-key USB macropad. Find out about different types of key switches, key caps, and the Pi Pico microcontroller, and see how just a few wires can control so many keys. You'll learn how to make one key press create a phrase or set of keyboard actions. While you won’t be able to write the next great novel or code software using just eight keys, the techniques you’ll learn can serve as a foundation for making your own full-scale keyboard. No prior experience with electronics is necessary, and no soldering will be required.
Paul Rubel lives in Arlington with his family. He is a software engineer with a computer engineering degree and a basement full of keyboard-like contraptions. He just wanted one key to act differently and now has a special keypad just for workouts.
