Overcome your fear of public speaking in this safe and welcoming environment. You will learn basic techniques to develop and deliver an effective speech and to appear (and be!) confident in front of others. Through engaging exercises and practice sessions, we’ll foster a fun, supportive atmosphere. You will have the opportunity to prepare and deliver some short speeches as you build confidence in your public speaking skills. Note: If you have one, please bring a cell phone with camera/video capabilities. Each student will be recorded on their own phone to be able to view and assess their performance. If you don't have a phone, the instructor will record you on her phone, and send you your video via email to view on your computer. Video recording is optional, but highly encouraged.
Joan Atlas majored in English at the University of Rochester, taught high school English for two years, then attended law school and practiced in a civil litigation firm for many years. Joan then returned to teaching, first at Middlesex Community College and then at Bentley University. In addition to teaching writing and literature, she taught public speaking for fifteen years, and has coached students privately in public speaking. Now semi-retired, Joan is excited about teaching public speaking at ACE this fall.
