Canasta: Beyond Beginners

Adult Enrichment / Games & Travel -
Spring 2025

Canasta continues to grow in popularity among adults of all ages. Designed for those who have completed the Canasta: Beginning class or have a basic understanding of Modern American Canasta, this class combines instruction with guided play. Rules will be reviewed, but the focus is on more advanced strategies, signaling, and special hands. Meet new friends or gather your crew—either way, canasta offers great brain exercise in a fun and social environment.

Emily Shire

Emily Shire is a Modern American Canasta Instructor in the Greater Boston Area. Emily learned to play Canasta as a kid and has been playing ever since. Emily is a game enthusiast and wishes to spread the love of canasta to the greater community. By day, Emily is a high school special education teacher. She brings her professional knowledge of teaching, learning and curriculum development to break down the game in a friendly and approachable way. She knows the game inside and out and has taught Canasta to hundreds of students. Emily and her mom, Bev, both teach Canasta and have created a highly visual curriculum where we play, play, play! Classes use a step-by-step approach to help increase your confidence and master the game! Emily is known for her instructional handouts and cheat sheets that aim to make every lesson a fun and accessible experience.
