Family Karate: Better Together

Family Classes -
Spring 2024

There are many benefits of martial arts for kids—better physical fitness, confidence, self-control, discipline, etc. It’s even better when kids and parents train together! Not only does it help keep the kids motivated, but it gives everyone something to work on together between classes. You’ll learn karate strikes, kicks, and even your first form. By the end, you’ll both have the opportunity to test for a yellow belt, the first rank. This is a fun class that balances keeping kids engaged with giving adults lots of new things to learn. Open to kids ages 7+ and adults of any age and fitness level.

Jeremy Kriegel

Jeremy Kriegel is a 2nd-degree black belt in Kenpo Karate. When his daughter was young, his wife, who had studied American Kenpo growing up, insisted that she had to learn self-defense, and enrolled her with Professor Rocky DiRico. Jeremy started learning the forms from the sidelines so he could help her practice at home. Six months later, he enrolled as a white belt at age 40. He progressed quickly, often getting multiple promotions, and began substitute teaching once he was awarded my brown belt. He earned his Shodan (1st degree black belt) in 2017 and Nidan (2nd degree black belt) in 2019. He also trains with Sensei Tom Duffy in Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu at the Rhode Island Budo Club.

When he started training, he was suffering from significant back problems. He had discs with bulges and fissures, one step from herniated and ruptured. In his physical training and martial arts training, he had to look for ways to progress that took into account his limitations. Whether it was how to modify a form, or different techniques to stretch and strengthen, he's been able to steadily improve his technique, strength, and flexibility. Now his back is much stronger and my discs are healthy. While martial arts wasn’t the only component of that recovery, it played a significant role. He uses this experience to help everyone find ways to train that fit their current capabilities.
