Understanding 20th Century Dance


Adult Enrichment / Highlights -
Fall 2020

Enhance your appreciation of dance as an exciting and ever-changing performance art. Develop an overall familiarity with dance as a contemporary art form through readings, video and discussion. Enlarge your critical perspective by discussing issues in dance, comparing points of view of major choreographers, and considering their particular contributions. We will explore many 20th century choreographers/significant dance figures including: Isadora Duncan, Nijinsky, Ballet Russe, Balanchine, Ruth St. Denis, Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Merce Cunningham, Katherine Dunham, Liz Lerman, Bill T. Jones, Mark Morris, Alvin Ailey, Jose Limon, Pilobolus, Twyla Tharp and Judson Church.

Kelley Donovan

Kelley Donovan has performed work by Ann Carlson and Liz Lerman. She is on the dance faculty at UMass Boston and has been a guest artist at Roger Williams University, Summer Stages Dance and has taught modern dance and choreography at Dance Complex, Green St. Studios, Mark Morris Dance Ctr. and teaches private lessons in technique and choreography over zoom in Cambridge. Her work has been produced by World Music/Crash Arts, Boston Ctr. for the Arts, MIT, Mobius, Tufts, Salem State, Harvard. In New York she has shown work at Movement Research, Martha Graham Dance Ctr, Cunningham Studio, University Settlement, Dixon Place, Joyce SoHo, and 92nd St. Y. She is currently producing a virtual series called The Speakeasy in 2020 inspired by the 1920s Speakeasy with poetry, dance, music and other performing arts monthly thru 2020.
