Art Deco in the Back Bay
Adult Enrichment / Walking Tours -
From the elaborate materials and rich colors to the mesmerizing geometric shapes and decadent detail work that define the aesthetic, Art Deco has become one of the most enduring, distinct, and exciting design movements. The planned development of the Back Bay in the second half of the 19th century opened up opportunities for Art Deco to be incorporated during its redevelopment a half-century later. This tour through the first four blocks of the Back Bay highlights examples of Art Deco design, from residential and commercial properties to institutional landmarks, including the second John Hancock building and New England Power. We will talk about the evolving character of the Back Bay and the development of new Art Deco buildings as well as the incorporation of Deco design into existing structures. Please note: Students will be asked to adhere to public health guidelines. Meeting location will be included in your receipt. All walks meet rain or shine.
