Read & Discuss: Classic Short Stories vs. Modern “Covers”
Adult Enrichment / Writing & Literature -
Spring 2021
What if Edgar Allen Poe had written The Tell-Tale Heart in the age of social media? Or Anton Chekhov had written for a modern audience? In this class we’ll look at classic short stories by writers like Poe, Chekhov, Alice Munro, Shirley Jackson, and John Cheever. Then we’ll read versions by contemporary authors who are “covering” or “remixing” those stories through updating, rewriting, or building upon them in interesting ways. Each week we’ll look at a different pair of stories and discuss how the modern update affects our interpretation of the originals. Please note: Before the first class please purchase McSweeney's Issue 49, featuring "cover stories." The book is available at Belmont Books.
