Dungeons & Dragons

ACE Kids K-12 / Games & Fantasy -
Spring 2021

Come play a tabletop roleplaying game with us—without leaving home! Our staff will be using Google Classroom to guide participants through the process of creating characters for an interactive story. You’ll flex your critical thinking muscles (and math skills) to get your characters out of sticky situations. Creative writing, arts, and crafts will also be encouraged to help the story along.

INTRO CLASSES are for students who have never played D&D or who have only played a session or two before. We also recommend the intro class for players familiar with the game in a traditional setting (around a table) but unfamiliar with the apps we use to create a virtual tabletop (Roll20 and DnD Beyond). The first couple of classes will be dedicated to getting set up to play. We teach students the ins and outs of using Roll20, D&D Beyond, and Beyond 20. Then they will work on creating characters and understanding how the game is played. Once these two topics are completed the instructors will run game sessions during class.

ADVANCED CLASSES are for players who have experience playing Dungeons and Dragons using virtual tabletop apps, specifically Roll20 and D&D Beyond. This class focuses less on mechanics and more on gameplay itself. The first few classes will be dedicated to making sure everyone has a character and is ready to go. After that, the instructor will jump right into the campaign.

NOTE:

  • For both classes, we discourage students from creating characters before the first day of class. Instructors and students will collaborate to determine what kind of story they will be created and in the past, students who arrived with a character in hand have been disappointed if their character doesn't fit the group decision.
  • For students who need to learn how to use the apps listed, we recommend the Intro Class to start and then switching to an Advanced Class for the next semester.

How it works: We use Google Classroom, Google Drive and also Zoom video chats.

Larp Adventure Programs

LARP Adventure Program is an interactive and improvisational theater program in which participants create a storyline featuring a heroic character. Through acting out the plot of the story, characters evolve and grow. LARP Adventure Program members and staff emphasize community, communication, and creativity. We foster a safe space for exploring life skills through role play. Enjoyable aspects include working with friends to create of a story, the opportunity to overcome challenges, the pursuit of a character’s objectives, and game-like aspects such as intellectual puzzles and athletic play.
