Understanding Sex & Gender: It’s a Spectrum Out There

Adult Enrichment / ACE Highlights -
Winter 2024

Nature or nurture, biology or social construction, boy or girl? What if these dichotomies don't do justice to the rich variety of human experiences? Learn how to define sex and gender, explore how gender norms come into being, and discover how these structures have functioned as inequity. You will gain an understanding of key definitions, a brief history of the women’s movement and the LGBTQ movement, as well as the difference between sex, gender, and sexuality. Key topics we’ll cover include feminism, gender identity, transitioning, pronouns, sexism, misogyny, and patriarchy.
